Global solar and wind capacity additions
How much new solar PV and wind capacity the world builds each year, and what the last five years imply for the rest of the decade. Hover or use the arrow keys for the numbers.
Capacity is nameplate AC/DC capacity in gigawatts, on-grid and off-grid summed. It is not generation: a gigawatt of solar and a gigawatt of wind produce very different amounts of electricity.
The projection is a linear fit to the last five actual years, clamped at zero, and nothing more. It is a trend line, not a forecast: it knows nothing about policy, supply chains or grid connection queues.
Annual additions are first differences of IRENA's cumulative series, so a retirement or a restatement can make a year look smaller than it was.
