Electric cars in Europe
What share of cars are electric — either of the cars sold this year, or of every car on the road. Those two are very different numbers: a fleet turns over slowly.
New registrations is Eurostat road_eqr_carpda, a
flow: cars registered for the first time that year. Car fleet
is road_eqs_carpda, a stock: every passenger car on the road.
Norway was at 88% of new registrations in 2024 but 27% of its fleet.
"Electric" means battery-electric only by default. The checkbox adds petrol and diesel plug-in hybrids.
The EU-27 average is recomputed here as total electric over total cars across the 27 member states — so the line names exactly the countries it claims. The bars also include Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, which are not in it.
The share-over-time view is capped at three countries. That is a palette limit, not an arbitrary one: past three, freely crossing lines cannot be told apart reliably under simulated colour-vision deficiency.
